How To Play

The Challenge

Figure out the secret four letter word of the day without screaming any other four letter words aloud.

The Rules

  • The selected word is a legal scrabble word
  • You make as many guesses as you wish (although, if you take too many you might not want to share the results)
  • You are only really scored by the number of guesses it took to arrive at the correct word
  • A meter is displayed next to each guess to guide your choices

The Meter

Each guess you make will be placed on the board with four balls on the right side. This is the meter and tells you how close your guess is to the secret word of the day. Each ball will be one of these 3:

  • 🟢: a correct letter in the correct place
  • 🌕: a correct letter, but not in the correct place for the secret word
  • ⚪: a letter not used to spell the secret word

This meter indicates two of the letters are correct and match the secret word, one of the other letters is in the secret word but in the wrong place, and the last letter is not in the secret word at all. This is where FourWord gets more difficult than those other word games: the challenge is figuring out which of the letters in the word you guessed are indicated by the balls in the meter.

So this is what the meter would look like if you guess "tell" and the secret word of the day is "belt".

Keyboard Marking

To assist you in this challenge, you can mark keys on the keybaord to keep track of the letters you have ruled out as potential letters in the secret word. Toggle in and out of "marking mode" by clicking the button in the lower left corner of the keyboard.

The marking key on the keyboard will change color to indicate you are in marking mode. Click it again to exit marking mode and resume guessing.

Any letter you mark on the keyboard will be shaded on the board to visually indicate which letter you have ruled out and which letter are still potentially part of the secret word.

When guessing, any letter entered you have previous marked on the keyboard will be displayed in orange to make it clear you are using a letter you have already ruled out.

Throwing In The Towel

While there is no limit to how many guesses you can make, after 5 guesses you have the option of rage quitting. Just click the button in the upper right corner to give up and find out the secret word of the day.
